From Slaves to Sons: Living in the Freedom of God’s Family | Wednesday in The Word for October 21, 2026

📖 SCRIPTURE DIVE: Galatians 4:1–7

Paul reveals the remarkable transformation God has accomplished through Jesus Christ. We were once held in bondage, but God sent His Son at the appointed time to redeem us and bring us into His family. Through Christ, we are no longer slaves—we are sons and daughters of God, with the Spirit assuring us of our relationship with our Heavenly Father and the promise of an eternal inheritance.

Read Galatians 4:1–7 and consider what it means to move from bondage to belonging.

Galatians 4:1–7 (New King James Version)

1 Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all,

2 but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.

3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.

4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

🔎 DEEP REFLECTION: Understanding Our Freedom and Identity in Christ

As we study Galatians 4:1–7, we discover God’s plan to move us from bondage into the freedom, relationship, and inheritance we receive through Jesus Christ. Reflect on the following questions and explore the supporting Scriptures to deepen your understanding of God’s redemptive work.

1. ⛓️ The Law: Our Guardian Until the Appointed Time

Before Christ came, the law served a purpose in God’s plan. It revealed sin, established God’s standard of righteousness, and exposed humanity’s inability to achieve righteousness through obedience to the law alone.

Contextual Question

How was the law a ‘guardian and steward’ until the appointed time? (Galatians 3:22–24)

Deeper Reflection

How did the law keep us under bondage? (Deuteronomy 27:26; Romans 7:7–9; Galatians 3:10, 19, 24; 4:3)

2. ⏳ God’s Perfect Timing: The Fullness of Time

Jesus did not come by accident or according to human scheduling. His coming fulfilled God’s redemptive plan, promised from the beginning and accomplished at the appointed time.

Contextual Question

What’s significant about ‘the fullness of time’? (Genesis 3:15; Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18–25)

3. ✝️ Jesus Christ: The Son Sent to Redeem Us

Jesus came as the fulfillment of God’s promise. He was born of a woman and born under the law, entering our human experience to accomplish what we could never accomplish for ourselves. Through His sacrifice, He redeemed us from the curse of the law and made adoption into God’s family possible.

Theological Question

What do we learn about Jesus from verses 4,5? (Matthew 5:17; John 1:14; 3:16, 17; Romans 8:2–4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13)

4. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Adoption: From Slavery to Sonship

Salvation is more than being released from bondage. Through Christ, we are welcomed into God’s family. We receive a new identity, a new relationship with our Heavenly Father, and the promise of an inheritance through Him. The Spirit of God’s Son dwells in our hearts, enabling us to cry out, “Abba, Father!”

Theological Question

Why is adoption so important? What’s the difference between a slave and a son? (John 1:12, 13; 15:15; Colossians 2:7–10; Hebrews 2:10–11)

❤️ LIVING IT OUT: Embracing Our Identity and Sharing Our Hope

Understanding our identity in Christ should transform how we live. We are not defined by our former bondage, past failures, or attempts to earn God’s acceptance. Through Jesus Christ, we have been redeemed, adopted, and given the privilege of calling God our Father.

Our new identity calls us to live with confidence in God’s love, walk in the Spirit, and invite others to experience the grace of becoming part of His family.

Personal Examination & Commitment

  1. How has being adopted in Christ changed my life? Who am I inviting to be a son or daughter of the Heavenly Father? (John 1:12; Romans 8:14–17; Ephesians 1:5, 6; 1 John 3:1)
  2. In what areas of my life am I still living as though I am in bondage rather than embracing the freedom and identity I have received in Christ?
  3. How can I demonstrate this week that I am a beloved child of God rather than someone striving to earn His acceptance?
  4. Who is one person I will intentionally invite to know Jesus Christ and experience the privilege of becoming a child of God?

🙏 My Commitment This Week

Because of Jesus Christ, I am no longer a slave but a child of God and an heir through Christ. This week, I will live in the freedom of my identity in Him, trust the love of my Heavenly Father, and take an intentional step toward sharing His invitation of salvation with someone else.
