📖 Scripture Dive

Paul confronts the Galatians with a foundational question: Are we made right with God by what we do, or by faith in what Christ has done? Galatians 3:1-9 brings the gospel back into focus by contrasting faith with reliance on human effort.

Galatians 3:1-9

1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?

2 This only I want to learn from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

4 Have you suffered so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?

5 Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

6 Just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.

8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”

9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

🔎 Deep Reflection

1. When Faith Gets Distorted

Paul’s language is intentionally strong. The Galatians had heard the gospel, experienced the work of the Spirit, and yet were being pulled toward another way of understanding their relationship with God.

How had they been ‘bewitched’?
(Galatians 1:6-9; Galatians 2:11-15)

2. Faith or Works?

Paul asks the Galatians to remember where their relationship with God actually began.

Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith?
(Matthew 7:24; John 5:24; Romans 8:9; Romans 10:9-10, 17; Galatians 2:16, 21; Galatians 3:2; Galatians 5:1)

3. How Do We Grow?

The Christian life does not begin by faith only to be completed through human effort. Paul challenges the Galatians to consider whether they have exchanged dependence on the Spirit for dependence on themselves.

Are you now being made perfect by the flesh?
(Galatians 2:20; Galatians 5:16; 2 Peter 3:18)

4. Abraham: A Picture of Faith

Abraham’s story gives Paul a powerful example. Before there was a law for Abraham to perform, there was a promise for him to believe.

How was Abraham justified?
(Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:3, 9-12, 19; Hebrews 11:8, 17)

Who are his true sons?
(Genesis 12:3; John 1:12; John 8:39-41, 56; Galatians 3:9, 14-18)

👣 Living It Out

The question is no longer simply what happened to the Galatians. The gospel confronts the ways we can lose sight of grace and begin trusting in ourselves.

Identify What Pulls You Away

What ‘bewitches’ us today from the true gospel?
(Matthew 7:13-15; Romans 6:6-14; Romans 8:12-15; Colossians 2:6-7)

Examine Your Trust

Am I trusting the works of the law or hearing of faith?
(Matthew 7:13-15; Romans 6:6-14; Romans 8:12-15; Colossians 2:6-7)

Make It Personal

As you reflect on Galatians 3:1-9, consider:

  • Where am I tempted to measure my relationship with God by what I accomplish?
  • Am I continuing to depend on the Holy Spirit, or am I trying to perfect in the flesh what God began by His Spirit?
  • What would it look like for me to intentionally walk by faith this week?
  • What is one specific area where I need to stop relying on myself and trust God?

🙏 Commitment: Lord, help me recognize anything that pulls my heart away from the simplicity of the gospel. Teach me to walk by faith, depend on Your Spirit, and trust in what You have already accomplished through Christ.
