Psalm 46:1-12

46 God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3 Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

4 There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.

6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;
He uttered His voice, the earth melted.

7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Who has made desolations in the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariot in the fire.

10 Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Context

  1. How do we see God as a refuge and strength? (2 Kings 19:20-37, Psalm 18:2, 27:1, 14, 40:1-3, 34:7, 81:1, 84:11, 138:3, Isaiah 40:31)

Reflection

  1. How is God real and present even in turbulent storms? (Psalm 34:4, Isaiah 24:6, 54:7, Luke 8:22-25, Philippians 4:5-7)
  2. How do destructive storms contrast with His divine streams? (Genesis 2:10, 3:8, Ez 47:1-5, Isaiah 41:10, 43:2, 16 , Zech 14:8, Revelation 22:1-5, 17)
  3. Why do the heathen rage? (Psalm 2:1-3, 2 Timothy 3:1-9, 2 Pet 2:12, 3:4, Revelation 17:14)
  4. What does it mean to ‘be still and know that I am God’? (Exodus 14:13, Isaiah 37:7, 15, 1 Peter 5:6, 7, Hebrews 13:6)

Testimony Time

  1. How has God been your ‘ever present help in time of need’? (Exodus 34:14, Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23)
  2. How can we ‘be still’ in our chaotic lives? (Psalm 1:2, 3, 27:4, 42:1, 2, 11, Isaiah 26:3, Luke 11:2-4, Philippians 3:10, 4:8, 9, Colossians 3:15, 16)
